Online Certificate Courses

All online courses are offered in collaboration with the University of Toronto, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work.

Please note: Foundations is a general interest course without prerequisites providing an overview of the state of the field of online counselling. Levels 1 and 2 are hands-on "how to" courses that will prepare you to do email-based counselling.

 Cybercounselling Level I

Cybercounselling - Level I is a twelve-week, three module online course designed for experienced professional counselling practitioners who want to be accessible to their clients via email. The full twelve weeks must be completed in order to be granted Cybercounselling Level I certification. Certificates are issued jointly by the University of Toronto, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and Therapy Online.

Prerequisites:

  • Master's degree in counselling or a related field;
  • 2 years of experience delivering in-person counselling (or equivalent combination of experience and training);
  • Proficiency using a computer and the internet;
  • Membership in a professional association and adherence to their ethical code.

Cybercounselling Fundamentals

This engaging two hour in-person workshop will provide participants with an introduction to the practical, ethical, and technical challenges inherent in online counselling. Each workshop is tailored to the participants and their specific interests and needs. This workshop will be helpful for learners considering taking the full certificate program Cybercounselling Level I and for agencies exploring the possibility of providing online counselling to their clients.

 Cybercounselling Level II

Cybercounselling - Level II is a twelve-week, three-module online course designed for counselling practitioners who have completed Cybercounselling Level I and want to deepen and refine their cybercounselling expertise.  Upon completion of Level II, participants are issued certificates provided jointly by the University of Toronto, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and Therapy Online.

  • Cybercounselling Level I

Introduction to Cybercounselling (full-day)

This engaging full-day in-person workshop will give participants a solid understanding of the technical, ethical, and practical issues involved in doing online counselling. It will also address the Presence Techniques developed and used by the presenter in his online practice. Participants will have opportunities to practice the techniques and receive feedback. This workshop will be helpful for learners considering taking the full certificate program Cybercounselling Level I and for agencies exploring the possibility of providing online counselling to their clients.

 Foundations of Cybercounselling

Offered in collaboration with the University of Toronto, this eight-week online course covers theories and research in online counselling as well as introduces participants to some of the practical aspects of doing counselling online. The course covers various modalities of online counselling including e-mail counselling, video counselling, real-time chat and website or bulletin-board based approaches. We also explore work being done with individuals, couples, families and groups online.

Prerequisites:

  • None

This course provides a suitable foundation for those who are interested in taking the applied practice course, Cybercounselling Level I, but do not have all of the necessary prerequisites. Note however that acceptance into Level 1 is at the discretion of the instructor and some Level 1 prerequisites cannot be waived.

The next course begins in October 2012.
